PPM will provide overarching and integrative project management for the Sierra Rutile Ltd (SRL) D6 Feasibility Study.
The Sierra Rutile Mine is located in the south west of Sierra Leone near the Imperri Hills, 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean. The SRL mining concession is one of the largest natural rutile deposits known in the world.
Sierra Rutile Limited has completed a strategic review of their business and has set a growth target which involves doubling their production of Rutile by 2014. The D6 Project is part of this strategy and comprises a new 1,000 tons per hour dredge and a primary concentration plant facility.
PPM scope includes the appointment and supervision of Dredge, Floating Treatment Plant and Land Plant EPCM consultants and the management of technical and non-technical work streams.
PPM's Owner's representative approach will ensure full transparency and client involvement in all key decisions.
Completion of a Feasibility study within 4 months, including the Christmas period, for a project of this size is a challenge. However, considering that PPM's vision is "Shifting Paradigms", it is in the company's DNA to rise to the challenge
PPM has identified and implemented an immediate short term action plan. that will focus on delivering a quality Feasibility Study to support SRL in successfully achieving their Mission to "sustainably and efficiently operate the world-class Sierra Rutile mine" and in their commitment to "being a positive force in not only the communities around the minesite but Sierra Leone as a whole" as embodied in their tagline "working for a better Sierra Leone".

Hernic has embarked on the implementation of a Cogeneration plant at their Brits Ferrochrome plant. The cogeneration plant uses waste gas from the furnace operations to fuel internal combustion engines that drive electrical generators. This electricity generation reduces Hernic’s dependence on ESKOM power and contributes to Hernic’s conformance with environmental and regulatory imperatives.
The Hernic Ferrochrome Co-generation plant prefeasibility study is complete.
The technology solutions evaluated during the prefeasibility study included:
-
a Steam Turbine option - a conventional boiler arrangement where furnace waste gas is used as fuel and the steam liberated is used to drive a steam turbine and an electrical generator)
-
an Internal Combustion Engine option - where furnace waste gas is used as fuel in a battery of internal combustion engines which drive electrical generators
-
an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) option - residual waste heat (exhaust) from the Internal Combustion Engine system is used to heat an organic fluid to drive a turbine which drives electrical generators
Hernic has approved the application of internal combustion engines as the recommended technology. A feasibility study will commence shortly and will be undertaken by the recommended solution provider, with PPM providing the owner representative role.
In parallel to the feasibility study, Hernic will be undertaking a CDM application process.

PPM has a long positive relationship with Kumba Iron Ore spanning 3
years and further evidence of the reputation PPM has with Kumba was
evidenced when PPM was appointed in April 2010 to complete a Conceptual
Study for the Zandrivierspoort Magnetite Project.
The brief for the study is to develop the requirements for a small scale
mining operation at Zandrivierspoort in the Limpopo province which is
driven by profitable business principles rather than maximising technical
efficiencies. The required time lines are extremely tight with the study
due for submission early June. Once again the underlying theme is “shifting
the conventional paradigms”.

PPM has recently been entrusted with the completion of a Bankable Feasibility
Study for the new AK6 Diamond Mine in Botswana. Boteti Exploration (Pty)
Ltd, a Botswana registered company, wishes to develop the new AK6 mine
as rapidly as possible, and due to PPM’s current extensive knowledge
of the project, along with its known ability for providing innovative
solutions into the southern African mining industry, the company has
been selected to undertake the BFS, detailed engineering and also the
construction of the mine. The new mine will be developed as a stand
alone operation that will generate up to 1 million carats per annum.
It is expected that the BFS will be completed by May 2010 and that construction
will commence around September 2010. The mine treatment plant design
is based on the use of autogenous milling for the liberation of the
diamonds from the kimberlite ore. This technology will be a first for
Botswana and it provides numerous benefits including reduced capital
expenditure, reduced operating costs, a faster build time and a quicker
production ramp-up period when compared to the current systems employed
at other diamond mines in the country. All of these have a significant
positive impact on the overall economics of the project. PPM is proud
to be associated with this exciting project that brings new diversity
to the diamond mining industry in Botswana.

Theresa Sithole, the learner PPM sponsors at the Kings School came to spend two days with us at the start of her holidays. We loved having her here as she is such an engaging young adult – not only did she listen to our long winded stories, but she also put some great effort into completing the tasks which she was asked to assist with!
PPM has some very serious rugby fanatics in its employ and it was therefore non-negotiable that Theresa joined us to watch the SA vs Samoa game at the Harvard Cafe. Although the game wasn’t one of the Bokke’s finest, we had a lot of fun and Theresa was taught the rules of the game – and she learnt how to give great advice to our team from the sidelines (well the other side of the TV)!

On Sunday 1 May 2011 PPM employees at Marropino Mine in Mozambique
participated in the Workers Day celebrations on site.
International Workers Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket
Massacre in Chicago, when, after an unknown person threw a dynamite
bomb at police as they dispersed a public meeting, Chicago police fired
on workers during a general strike for an eight hour workday, killing
several demonstrators and resulting in the deaths of several police
officers.
The labour movement has come a long way since then and we are now able
to celebrate this occasion. As you can see from the photo’s a
good time was had by all. HAMCE challenged the local village soccer
team to a game and were beaten 0-2, the HAMC Theatre Group and Traditional
Dancers entertained the crowd and all were treated to a hearty lunch.

A group of PPM employees paid a visit to The Kings School and Baby
Haven one afternoon.
At TKS we first met with some of the schools staff and were taken on
a quick tour of the school for the benefit of those PPM’ers who
hadn’t previously visited the school. We sponsor a student at
the school and Theresa was excused from school a little early so that
she was able to visit Baby Haven with us. She is a really lovely young
girl – chatty, smart and well mannered.
Baby Haven has recently moved to a new house and this was our first
visit to their new home. There were only 3 babies at Baby Haven on the
day – their numbers fluctuate and they can take up to 7 or 8 babies
at a time. Joanna (housemom) and Thandi (helper) hosted us and showed
us their new home which is beautiful – lots of space and neat
as a pin. We spent a couple of hours chatting, coo’ing, ooh’ing
and ah’ing! Babies were passed around, fed and played with –
2 little girls and a very busy little boy!
After our visit a few of us took Theresa out for a snack – told
her she could choose the venue, any venue. Guess where we went –
Mac Donalds!! But it was super and it was good to get to know Theresa
better.

party as well as Mike and Yana Gillespie’s wedding which took place
the following week.
Wishing PPM many more birthdays and happy and successful years to come.

PPM is fully committed to, and supportive of Broad Based Black Economic
Empowerment (BBBEE) as embodied in the Codes of Practice and the Scorecard
published by the Department of Trade and Industry.
As a relatively young company PPM was formally accredited for the first
time last year based on the 2009 audited financial statement and a level
8 accreditation was achieved.
The process for the annual re-accreditation has been initiated based
on the 2010 audited financial statements. An internal assessment supported
by an appointed consultant indicates that we will improve our accreditation
up 2 levels to level 6.
An internal committee chaired by an Executive Director meets monthly
to set targets and review progress against the various domains of the
BBBEE Scorecard.
Currently the scores in the defined domains of the Scorecard
are as follows:
- Employment Equity 35%;
- Skills Development 45%;
- Preferential Procurement 97%;
- Enterprise Development 70%;
- Socio-economic Development 97%.

February 2010
PPM has supported The Hope Factory which is a national organisation
providing a holistic entrepreneurial development program. This includes
training in business skills, life skills and technical skills, as well
as a comprehensive job creation / incubator programme, to further develop
these skills.
The Hope Factory works to develop and place entrepreneurs in their own
business and those who do not become entrepreneurs, are placed in the
formal sector or continue as part of the job creation program. A mentoring
and support structure is in place through all phases of the program,
and this continues afterwards to ensure continued financial sustainability
of the entrepreneurs.
The Hope Factory has trained 700 entrepreneurs and after completion
of the program, 87% were financially productive. Further follow up over
a three year period shows that 82% have remained financially productive.

PPM provides monthly support to one of the volunteers who works full
time with abandoned babies. Her name is Joanna Lung
and she works for Baby Haven which is one of the ministries
of Masiphane Projects.
Baby Haven serves the abandoned and orphaned babies of Johannesburg,
many of them healthy children of HIV+ parents by providing a home and
loving environment. Baby Haven serves as the link between the babies
and their adoptive parents, their “forever" families.
Baby Haven started in 2003 after a series of articles were published
in the Johannesburg newspapers highlighting the large numbers of babies
that had been abandoned in local hospitals. Many mothers who went to
hospital to give birth learned of their HIV+ status and simply left
the hospital without their baby. Other babies were found abandoned in
rubbish bins, in fields and public places, and taken to hospital.
Baby Haven is a project of the Community Development Program Trust,
a South African registered trust, and is subject to the rules and regulations
of South African non-profit organizations. For more details please contact
Ashly on ashly.m@ppmprojects.co.za
or visit the Baby Haven web site www.babyhaven.org

November 2009
PPM recently participated in the judging,
and sponsored a number of prizes, for the Germiston High School annual
science competition. Benedict, one of the prize winners for his project
which modeled an airport terminal building, was the lucky recipient
of an all expenses paid instructional flight in a two seater glider.
Although a little apprehensive Benedict was
smiling broadly before the flight. His interest in the aircraft overcame
his nervousness and he asked a number of technical questions – he was
unsure of the need for such large windows in the aircraft on the grounds
that “ … there can’t be much need to look outside as there are no roads
up there …”

PPM employees donated items and money (with
which we bought items requested by organisations assisting in this tragedy
such as toiletries, washbasins, stationery to keep the little ones busy,
blankets, etc). All these items were delivered to the Germiston Town
Hall where thousands of foreigners were being cared for.
